Sweet Celebrations and Fun Learning!

October was full of fun and learning! Students joined the Sugarcane Festival parade, enjoyed Literacy Night activities inspired by fairytales, and learned about fire safety during the 1st-grade visit to the fire station. The 3rd graders built seawalls to protect homes, and an author visited to share his Louisiana French stories and inspire young writers.

Hi Sugar!

Our students joined the celebration of the annual Sugarcane Festival, proudly parading through the streets to honor this local tradition and represent the Mighty Mustangs of NLE.

Saving Tiny Homes from Big Waves!

Our third graders recently explored how weather hazards can affect communities and how people can protect themselves from these natural events. As part of their science unit, students designed and built their own seawalls using modeling clay to protect miniature houses from rising water. Through this hands-on experiment, they learned how human innovation can help reduce the impact of storms and flooding.

The classroom was filled with creativity, teamwork, and a spirit of discovery!

Discussion with an author

Chase Cormier, a Louisiana author, visited our school to share excerpts from his book "Mal". Drawing inspiration from his childhood memories, "Mal" tells the story of “Perroquet” (Parrot), Chase’s childhood nickname, through a series of short texts—some true, others imagined.

During his visit, Chase read a lively passage about ants and Sunday bingo with his grandmother, written in Louisiana French. The students enthusiastically joined in, repeating phrases just as he once did with his grandparents..

Writing workshop with Chase Cormier

With the 5th and 6th graders, Chase led a creative writing workshop, encouraging students to write about one of their own memories and then reimagine it with fictional details—just as he does in his work. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore storytelling and Louisiana French in a fun, meaningful way.

Literacy Night: A Fairytale Evening!

NLE Literacy Night was truly magical! Families enjoyed a variety of fairytale-themed activities inspired by classic stories like Cinderella, Rapunzel, and others. Students created crowns fit for royalty, used binary code to write their initials on a magic wand, matched famous heroes with their quotes, and even built the tallest tower for Rapunzel!

Over 100 participants joined the fun and explored the Book Fair at the same time. A big thank you to all the teachers and volunteers who helped make this wonderful evening a reality!

Discovering Safety with our Local Heroes

The first-graders' classes had an exciting field trip to visit the firefighters and police officers in our community. The students learned all about the equipment and safety procedures used during fires and emergencies. They were amazed by the fire trucks, sirens, and uniforms — and discovered how these everyday heroes keep everyone safe. It was a fun and educational experience for our young learners!
